Happy Ganesh Chaturthi 2025 |
Ganesh Chaturthi begins on September 19 and concludes on September 28, 2023.
The Significance of Ganesh Chaturthi
Ganesh Chaturthi is a cherished Hindu festival that venerates Lord Ganesha, known as the god of wisdom, prosperity, and new beginnings. This celebration holds immense cultural importance, especially in states like Maharashtra, Gujarat, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, and Karnataka.
The Story and Rituals
Legend: According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Parvati crafted Lord Ganesha from the very earth of her being. He was entrusted with guarding her while she took her bath. However, upon Lord Shiva's return, Ganesha, unaware of his identity, stopped him. This led to a fateful incident where Shiva severed Ganesha's head with his trident. Parvati was grief-stricken and demanded her son's revival. In response, Shiva replaced Ganesha's head with that of an elephant, breathing life back into him. Shiva also declared that henceforth, Ganesha would be the first deity worshipped before any other.
Rituals: The commencement of Ganesh Chaturthi involves the installation of clay idols representing Lord Ganesha in homes and public pandals. These idols are adorned with flowers, garlands, jewelry, and various ornaments. Devotees offer modak (a sweet dumpling), coconut, jaggery, fruits, and flowers. Chants of mantras, bhajans, and the performance of aarti (a ritual of waving lamps) are carried out to honor Lord Ganesha.
Celebrations and Farewell
The festivities extend over a span of ten days, concluding with grand processions featuring music, dance, and spirited slogans of "Ganpati Bappa Morya". On the final day, the idols of Lord Ganesha are immersed in rivers, lakes, or the sea, symbolizing a temporary farewell and a heartfelt plea for his return in the following year.
