Understanding Scrub Typhus: Causes and Spread of the Disease"
Scrub Typhus, a zoonotic disease, is transmitted through the bites of tiny mites called chiggers. This illness is caused by a type of bacteria called Orientia tsutsugamushi, which is gram-negative. When infected mites, often carried by animals like rodents, bite a person, the bacteria enter the bloodstream and gradually spread throughout the body.
Scrub Typhus: Symptoms and Prevention Tips
Recognizing Scrub Typhus: Common Signs and Risks
Scrub Typhus often shows symptoms like fever, headache, body aches, and the development of sores or lesions at the site of the bite. Typically, these signs appear within 10 days after exposure. Seeking prompt treatment is crucial for patients with this disease, as delays can lead to serious complications, including organ failure and potentially fatal outcomes.
Understanding How Scrub Typhus Spreads
Scrub Typhus is primarily spread through contact with small mites found in forests, grasslands, and farms where people work. In India, especially in Odisha, this disease has been re-emerging, with hundreds of cases typically reported during the rainy season each year.
Managing Scrub Typhus: Treatment and Prevention
Scrub Typhus, like many bacterial diseases, can be diagnosed through laboratory tests like serology and PCR. While there is no vaccine available, antibiotics, particularly Doxycycline, are commonly recommended for treating the infection.
It is advised to use insecticides in areas where disease-carrying insects breed, control the rodent population, and take precautions such as thorough cleaning and wearing protective clothing while working in farms or forests. Public Health Director, Niranjan Mishra, explained, “Scrub Typhus is not a new disease. It was detected in Odisha last year too. This is a bacterial disease and occurs when people are bitten by a red-insect like thing called chigger. This is especially when people are working in the fields and jungle. Most common symptoms of this disease include fever, headache, body ache and scrabs or lesions at the place of bite.”
