He revealed that some stars asked for ₹40 crore to star in the film Kill, which was the entire budget of the film. Karan expressed his frustration, saying he has stopped agreeing to such huge demands from actors. In the past, he used to give in to these demands, but now he feels it's unfair and unsustainable for the industry.

 Zoya Akhtar’s Advice to Karan

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Karan Johar was joined by filmmaker Zoya Akhtar. Zoya, known for films like Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, told Karan that he needed to stop paying actors such high amounts. Karan agreed, admitting that he no longer gives in to these demands. He now questions actors about their previous film performances and the box office results before agreeing to their fee. He shared, “If your last films didn’t open well, how can you ask for so much money?”

 The Issue of Overpaying Stars

Karan used Kill, a small film he produced, as an example. He mentioned how many big stars refused to be a part of the film unless they were paid ₹40 crore, the same amount as the film’s budget. He expressed his disbelief at this, saying, “How can you ask for the entire budget of the film? There’s no guarantee the movie will even make that much money.”

The Importance of Fair Payment

The filmmaker also talked about the unfair pay gaps in the Bollywood industry. He pointed out how editors and cinematographers, who play crucial roles in making a film successful, often don't get paid what they deserve. “An editor can change the entire narrative of a movie, yet we hesitate to pay them well, while actors ask for huge sums without promising box office success,” Karan added.

Bollywood Needs a Change

Karan Johar believes Bollywood should follow Hollywood’s example, where new actors are given opportunities in big-budget films. He feels that Bollywood needs to invest in younger talent and not be overly dependent on established stars, especially when they demand excessive fees. Karan highlighted the need for a balanced approach where payment is based on actual performance rather than star power alone.

Zoya Akhtar’s Take on the Situation

Zoya Akhtar also agreed with Karan’s thoughts and emphasized that directors and producers must stop paying actors more than they are worth. She believes this change will benefit the industry in the long run, leading to better quality films and a more equitable pay structure for all involved in filmmaking.

Conclusion

Karan Johar has made it clear that the Bollywood industry needs a shift in how actors are paid. With the support of fellow filmmakers like Zoya Akhtar, Karan is determined to create a fairer system, where actors are paid based on their actual contributions to a film’s success. As Bollywood evolves, it will be interesting to see how these changes impact both the industry and the stars within it.
