India has invented a groundbreaking cancer treatment that can cure patients in just three to four months. Remarkably, this treatment is ten times cheaper than other cancer therapies.
Cancer:New Treatment Approved
In October 2023, a new Made in India cancer treatment called NexCAR19 CAR-T Cell Therapy was approved for human trials. Cancer has become the second leading cause of death in India after heart diseases. Surprisingly, India ranks about 60th in cancer survival rates according to recent surveys.

Survival Rates Compared
In countries like Japan, where one in ten people is over 80, the cancer survival rate is about 20% higher than in India. However, some Indian scientists have developed a therapy that could potentially elevate India's ranking significantly. Until now, similar treatments were mainly researched in the USA and China.
India’s Entry into Cancer Treatment
Now, India has made a remarkable entry into this field with an advanced version of the therapy that is even better than those in the USA and China. It is also much more affordable.
Cost Comparison
Medical experts indicate that treatments in other countries cost between 4 to 8 crore rupees. In contrast, India's version is ten times cheaper than these treatments.
No Reported Side Effects
So far, there have been no reported side effects from the Indian cancer treatment. In the USA, approved therapies often have severe neurological side effects, requiring patients to stay in the ICU for days after treatment. In contrast, at least 53 patients have tried the Indian therapy, and none have experienced such side effects. This brings hope to cancer patients.
Success Story of Dr. V.K. Gupta
The technology was first tested on Dr. V.K. Gupta, a retired army doctor who is now cancer-free. He had acute lymphoblastic leukemia, a highly aggressive form of cancer that attacks white blood cells and weakens the immune system. When he learned in mid-2023 that his cancer was terminal and he had only three to four months to live, he enrolled in the NexCAR19 trials as a last resort.
Dr. Gupta's treatment started on November 30, and by February, in just three months, he was completely cancer-free.
How It Works
You may wonder how this is possible. The technology involves T cells, a special category of immune cells that identify viruses, bacteria, and cancer cells. Cancer cells can evade these T cells, allowing them to grow uncontrollably.
To counter this, doctors extract T cells from the patient’s body, modify them, and re-inject them so they can find and destroy the cancer cells without harming normal cells.
Patient Experiences
Currently, there have been no reported side effects from this Indian therapy. Some patients felt so good that they refused to take rest after their treatments. Since December 2023, around 25 patients have been enrolled, with 15 already infused.
Addressing Limitations
This is a significant achievement, but there are still shortcomings to address. The technology is still in its early testing phase. Although it is ten times cheaper than similar therapies in the USA or UK, it still costs about 40 lakh rupees, which is high for many in India, where the average monthly income is only 16,000 to 17,000 rupees.
Current Limitations of Treatment
Dr. Rahul Parwar, founder and CEO of Immuno Act, explained that this technology currently treats only one specific type of cancer: B-cell lymphoma. Although advancements are expected in the future, this limitation is a significant disadvantage. Every five minutes, someone in India is diagnosed with blood cancer, resulting in 192 deaths daily.
Blood cancer causes patients’ blood cells, like white blood cells (WBCs), red blood cells (RBCs), and platelets, to malfunction, hindering their ability to protect the body and provide nutrition.
The Challenge Ahead
There has not yet been a 100% solution for blood cancer, as it comprises about 100 different types. Thus, no single treatment has been developed to address all these variations.
If a comprehensive solution for all types of cancer can be found, it would offer great hope to patients.
This possibility exists. Let's see if India's innovative technology can achieve further success in the future.
