In India, there are about 8.4 million Buddhists, which is around 0.7% of the country's total population. Most Buddhists in India live in Maharashtra, Ladakh, Arunachal Pradesh, and Sikkim. Although Buddhism originated in India, its presence is now more prominent in other parts of Asia.

1. China has the largest Buddhist population with 244 million people (18% of the population), mostly practicing Mahayana Buddhism.


2. Thailand has 65 million Buddhists (93% of the population), following Theravada Buddhism.


3. Japan has 45 million Buddhists (36% of the population), mainly practicing Mahayana Buddhism.


4. Myanmar (Burma) has 38 million Buddhists (88%), mostly Theravada followers.


5. Vietnam has 14 million Buddhists (15%), following Mahayana.


6. Sri Lanka has 14 million Buddhists (70%), mostly Theravada.


7. South Korea has 11 million Buddhists (22%), following Mahayana and Vajrayana.


8. Cambodia has 15 million Buddhists (97%), mostly Theravada.


9. Mongolia has 2 million Buddhists (53%), mostly Vajrayana.


10. Bhutan has about 75% Buddhists, following Vajrayana Buddhism.


Most Buddhists live in East Asia and South-East Asia, with China, Thailand, and Japan having the largest numbers. Despite the smaller number of followers in India today, the country remains historically and spiritually significant as the birthplace of Gautama Buddha and the original source of his teachings.
