Featuring Archita Sahu as Dr. Sruti Mohapatra, the film is directed by the acclaimed Susant Mani. With an ensemble cast including Rajesh Jais, Hara Rath, Smita Mohanty, Mohan Majithia, and Madhumita, the movie highlights the struggles and triumphs of Dr. Sruti, who redefined the world for the differently-abled, all from her wheelchair.
A Story of Triumph Over Adversity
Born with aspirations of becoming an IAS officer, Sruti Mohapatra cleared the UPSC Civil Services exam and secured a place in the Group A allied services. Unfortunately, a tragic car accident before her interview left her with a severe spinal cord injury, shattering her childhood dream.
Despite the immense physical and emotional challenges, Dr. Sruti did not let her circumstances define her. In 2001, she founded Swabhiman, the State Disability Information and Resources Center in Bhubaneswar. Her organization continues to empower differently-abled individuals across Odisha. Overcoming barriers, she earned her Ph.D. and began private tuitions, Spoken English classes, and a study circle, gradually regaining confidence and transforming the perception of differently-abled individuals in society.
The Creative Vision Behind the Film
Director Susant Mani shared his thoughts on bringing Dr. Sruti's story to the screen. “Making a biopic is a daunting task. Unlike fiction, there is limited scope for imagination, and we must balance realism with dramatic storytelling to appeal to a wider audience,” he said.
Lead actress Archita Sahu expressed her nervous excitement about portraying Dr. Sruti. “This is one of the most challenging roles I’ve ever taken. It’s a story filled with struggle, disappointment, patience, and success. Playing Dr. Sruti is a blessing, and this film is a landmark moment in my acting career,” she shared.
Accolades and Recognition for Dr. Sruti Mohapatra
Dr. Sruti’s contributions have earned her numerous accolades, including:
- The Nari Shakti Puraskar in 2020 and 2021, presented by the President of India.
- The CNN-IBN Real Heroes Award in 2010.
- The Vidya Bhawan Social Service Award from former President Pranab Mukherjee in 2013.
Her efforts to empower differently-abled individuals and dismantle societal barriers have made her an icon of hope and inspiration.
Audience Expectations and Industry Impact
The announcement of Pade Akasha has generated excitement and curiosity among viewers. While some have applauded the Odia film industry for spotlighting the inspiring stories of local icons, others have expressed reservations about the film’s promotional materials.
Madhusuman Sethi, a corporate employee, remarked, “A biopic requires authenticity, and the protagonist’s look should resonate with the real-life character. However, it’s a positive step for the Odia film industry to explore such narratives.”
On the other hand, Seshma, a B.Tech student, appreciated the effort, saying, “It’s thrilling to see Odisha’s legacy being celebrated through films. Stories like Dr. Sruti’s deserve recognition, not just locally but globally.”
